Uruguayan Circular Bridge Provides Panoramic View to Drivers and Pedestrians

Introduction

Recently a circular bridge was built on the southern coast of #Uruguay, replacing the traditional raft that used to connect its two cities Rocha and Maldonado. The construction and location of the bridge marks a marked departure from the traditional bridges that are constructed over the water bodies. This bridge was constructed in a record period of 12 months or a year when such constructions take many months or a few years in our country.

Circular Bridge

Designed by the noted architect of Uruguay Rafael Vinoly, the bridge provides road connectivity to two cities Rocha and Maldonado on the country's southern coast. The connectivity earlier used to be through a traditional raft crossing over the water body skirting the coast. The journey through this newly constructed circular bridge is rather breath-taking for the drivers as well as the pedestrians. The name of the water body over which this architectural marvel has come up is Laguna Garzon.

Novel Concept

The concept of the architect was to transform the journey of people over the water body into an event marked with panoramic view of the sea and the surrounding landscape. Due to this visual cue, the vehicular movement on this bridge becomes slower, thereby lowering the incidence of accident. This novel concept in design has enabled the people passing by to have enough time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Now, people are even seen stopping their vehicles on the side lanes to get the full view of the sea and the surrounding landscape. The architect has not even forgotten the pedestrians as they have amble place at the centre to stop and watch the nature in action.

Neendakara – Fishing Harbour in Kollam

Introduction

Neendakara is a small fishing village near the outskirts of Kollam Municipality. It is situated at a distance of 9 kilometers from the Kollam city on its northern side. The port in Neendakara has been regarded as the intermediate fishing port of the Kollam district in Kerala. The intermediate port is located approximately 30 kilometers north of Paravur another business point in Kollam district of Kerala in India. The word “Neendakara” seems to have originated from Malayalam word that translates exactly into “Long Bank” in the English language.

History of Neendakara

In the pre-independent India, first, the Portuguese settled down in Kollam district or pre-independent Quilon in the early part of the 16th century. They made the Tangaserry as their base. During this time, the ships bringing goods and merchandise used to pass by this place. Older people used to say that the Neendakara Bridge used to witness the passage of the ships towards the port. This is now part of the national highway 47 that connects Kanyakumari to Kochi. This bridge also connects the Neendakara village to Sakthikulangara through a water channel across the Ashtamudi Lake. Initially, small cargo handling used to happen in this port as well. Later, it was moved to the nearby Tangasseri port, near Saint Thomas fort at the time of the Dutch.

Importance in Trade

This port worked as the center or nodal point for the Indo-Norwegian Fisheries Community project since 1953 after India got independence. The project continued for eight years till the Kerala government took over it. As the port and the fishing hamlet were in thick of affairs before independence, the place became one of the prime locations for the establishment of ports in Kerala. Due to its strategic location in the East-West International Sea route for the international trade, the Neendakara port has retained its importance even after the coming of an operational port in Kochi. This busy sea route for international commerce is just 8 kilometers from the shore of Kollam in Kerala. Since the ancient times, the locals in that coastal hamlet have been in the fish trade. That is the reason the region has emerged as one of the prime fishing harbors in the whole of Kerala. As a result, many marine export-oriented businesses have come near this fishing hamlet along the National Highway 47.  Now, people are moving to the Gulf countries to earn money quickly. As a result, the living conditions of the locals have improved to a large extent.

Demography

The majority of people in this fishing hamlet are Christians. The village also has a large number of Hindus and Muslims. But their number is lesser than that of Christians. As a result, a large number of Christian institutions have come up in its vicinity. One such building is that of the St. Sebastian Church. At present, this 500-year-old church belongs to the Diocese of Quilon. The celebration in this church is a big affair in this part of the world. The masses take out the idols of Saint Sebastian and Mother Mary in the business centers and the houses, and business establishments would be illuminated to welcome these idols.

Historical Tangasseri Fort Near Kollam Beach – A Travelogue

Introduction

Saint Thomas Fort is located in the beach town of Tangasseri, near Kollam district in Kerala. It is a ruined fort located about 5 kilometers away from the Kollam city.  It is about 71 kilometers from the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. The historians believe that this fort was associated with the Chinese trade from the first millennium A.D. As the years passed by, it became the center of trade for even the Portuguese after they found out India.

Origin of Saint Thomas Fort in Kollam

The beach town to a great extent is indebted to this historical church for its prominence in the past. When Tangasseri became the trade center for the Chinese, the Dutch, the Portuguese, and the British, the Saint Thomas fort became the center of commercial activities. Due to the trade prominence it enjoyed when compared to other cities in pre-independent Kerala, it soon turned into a Golden Village for different traders in the region. After finding the significance of this small town, this fort was built by Alfonso de Albuquerque with the help of queen of Portuguese to organize and protect trade being developed there. At that time, this fort was known as the Forte de Sao Tome. After the establishing of the fort, a port was built in 1515 by the Portuguese to facilitate trade with other countries. Soon it became the power center of the region for the Portuguese. By 1518, the sovereignty of Saint Thomas Fort was complete with the Portuguese controlling the trade through the adjacent port.

Integration of the Fort with Kerala Culture

After having established the sovereignty of this fort and associated port, the Portuguese continued their reign in this region for several years till they were overpowered by the Dutch in 1661. As a result of this transition in the history, both the fort and the port were handed over to the Dutch. They further improved the facilities at the fort and the Tangasseri town and made it into a capital by the name Dutch Malabar. Later, the town and the port fell into the hands of the British East India Company. Later, the authorities of Saint Thomas Fort accepted the lease by Travancore as part of the British government arrangement for a period of 20 years.

Current Situation of the Fort

During its heydays, Saint Thomas Fort was originally 20 feet tall. Due to the poorer maintenance, only some portion of it remains today. That portion is currently facing the beach. The Government of India has taken upon itself the mantle of restoring its original form, and it has undertaken its restoration work through its wing Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). At present, the restoration work has been completed. The tourists visiting this area can visit this fort that tells its importance in the textbooks of Kerala history. At present, this fort is under the control of ASI.
